OMG! I am so glad that the new sunscreen from Klairs is my first review! Sunscreens are undoubtedly the product that I buy the more, and I use the most. The quest to find the perfect sunscreen is a hard one. You are probably familiar with thick, pasty white and oily sunscreens that are so dreadful to use every day. Not to mention that the science behind sunscreen filters are complicated and often not know by most of us.
I strongly encourage you to wear a daily sunscreen as your last step or before your applied your foundation. Sunscreens are the quintessence of anti-aging. So let’s dive into the review.
The formula aka the ingredients:
The first thing I always do when I look for a new product is to check the list of ingredients. As it is a sunscreen, I check the level of protection against UVB and UVA and the sunscreen filters?
The rating of UVB protection is always written with the SPF (Sun Protection factors), and the score of the UVA protection is displayed using the PA rating with + sign (four + being the highest rating).
If you want to understand more check this post from Paula’s choice website.
The Klairs Soft airy UV essence as an SPF of 50+ and a PA rating of ++++. It is the highest rating that you can get for UVB and UVA rating.
The UV filters:
The Klairs Soft airy UV essence contains two filters one guards against UVB (the UV rays that gives sunburn) and the other one against UVA (the UV rays that penetrates in the deepest layer of the skin). Both filters are organic filterers.
Uvinul® T150 and Uvinul A Plus:
Uvinul T150 (Ethylhexyl Triazone) ensure the UVB protection. This filter has a high absorption against UVB which means that even at low concentration you get a high SPF rating (SPF gives the protection against UVB). It has a high affinity with the keratin and is not soluble in water making it highly water resistant. Finally, it has extremely low penetration in the skin and is exceptionally photostable. Overall, Uvinul T150 is one of the best UVB filters.
The Klairs Soft airy UV essence uses Uvinul A Plus (or know as Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate) for the protection against the UVA. Uvinul A Plus is an outstanding UVA filter, it is photostable (not degraded upon UV exposure, thus remaining efficient for an extended period), it is highly effective at low concentration and the best part it has a broad spectrum that filters UVA type I and II!
Uvinul T150 and Uvinul A Plus are both not endocrine disruptors and are state of the art regarding UV protection. I invite you to check them on the EWG.org website.
Here are the links:

This sunscreen is silicone free and is water-based. The rest of the ingredient are humectants among them Butylene Glycol, Hyaluronic acid (Sodium Hyaluronate), antioxidant vitamin E (tocopherol), skin brightening Niacinamide (also known as vitamin B3), anti-aging ingredients with adenosine and healing ingredients with beta-glucan, panthenol and allantoin.
There is no artificial perfume, but it contains Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Oil an essential oil. I am not a big fan of essential oil. They include knowing skin irritants (limonene for example). I would prefer not to have it. I presume it is as a very low concentration has it is the last ingredient. The Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Oil gives a light perfume that disappears shortly after application.
The texture:
The texture is watery as a serum. When you squeeze it from the tube, it appears creamy and then melts into a beautiful essence like lotion. It easily spreads onto your skin and melts away really rapidly. Upon application, you feel a refreshing feeling that in my book is divine. This sunscreen is perfect for hot, humid weather and reapplication.
The finish:
Because it is waterbased, you need to wait around 2-3 minutes to let it absorb into your skin. The finish is soft almost mat but leave a pleasant moisturizing film. It does not have any white cast and is a great makeup base!
The Marketing claims: are they right?
Klairs describes it as:
« Everyday sun Protector. The soft, weightless, invisible, daily sunscreen that guards against UVA, UVB without leaving greasiness or white finish. »
The claims are true, and the product performs as they say.
My conclusion:
I adore this sunscreen. It is for sure my new daily sunscreen. This product will be perfect if the essential oil is removed and add a bit more antioxidant. If I’m picky, I would add some Tinosorb to increase the UVA protection. The two filters have a strong affinity with the strateum corneum. It means there are difficult to remove. To know how to properly cleanse your skin read my blog post on it 😉
The best in this formula are:
- Outstanding organic UVA and B filters
- Transparent formula (no white cast)
- Beautiful finish
- Great as a makeup base
- No endocrine perturbators
- No allergenic sunscreen filters
