If you are not new to my content you will know that I’m not a big fan of La Roche Posay. For once I am quite pleased with this sunscreen!
I have to say that this sunscreen has a lot to please me and I am quite happy to tell you all about it.
La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra cream SPF50+ is a European sunscreen and therefore as to follow the guileless of the EU. In the EU, the UVA protection has to be 1/3 of the SPF or above and be broad-spectrum (until 370nm or above). The UVA protection factor is determined using the COLIPA method. I will probably dedicate a post about it, be prepared for some science!
What to look at when choosing a sunscreen?
When you choose a sunscreen the most important points are the SPF rating and the UVA rating when you know it. La Roche Posay is one of the few brands that disclose the UVA-PF and the Ultra cream has a UVA-PF of 35 using the PPD measured in vivo. I would guess it is from the Japanese method. So we are talking about serious protection here. Then, it is important to look at the filters which help to guess the UV coverage and to avoid certain filter if you are sensitive to one of them.
Tinosorb S (UVB, UVAII, UVAI), Octyl salicylate (UVB), Uvinul T150 (UVB), Mexoryl XL (UVB, UVAII, UVAI), Avobenzone (UVA), Mexoryl SX or Ecamsule (UVAII, UVAI).
I have to say that this an exceptional combination of filters. There are 4 filters that ensure the UVA filtering which is rare. Commonly, two filters are used. Mexoryl XL is only used by L’Oreal (patent) and is a broad-spectrum filter like Tinosorb S. Mexoryl SX is also patent by L’Oreal and filter all the UVA. Love it. The redundancy of filters is magnificent!
The rest of the formula
It has manly two humectants glycerin and propanediol. Nothing wrong here and very safe. The rest of the formula is mainly emollients to solubilize the filters especially Diisopropyl Sebacate. Diisopropyl Sebacate helps to have a less greasy sunscreen. There is one extract from a medicinal plant Scutellaria Baicalensis. They are some report for its anti-inflammatory properties but I found nothing on the skin. There is also alcohol likely to lighten the formula.
None if you choose the fragrance-free formula
Texture and finish
This sunscreen falls into my category of hardcore sunscreens. We are talking about very protection. Therefore the number of UV filters is high. It is a cream that is not thick. The finish is dewy but still workable especially compared to other hardcore sunscreens. With a powder, it is easy to make it work and it is descent under makeup. A feature that I love is that it has no white cast and it doesn’t stink the eyes. This formula is very safe and for once compatible with darker skin tone.
