All about hydration

Dehydration is the biggest skin issues that I encounter. The primary function of our skin is to retain water in our body. All our cells need water to function and so our precious skin. Fixing this issue is not that easy when you don’t know the right product to layer.

Dehydrated skin

Dehydrated skin is the number one skin issue that I always encounter. This is due to the lack of water in the stratum corneum (the dead skin layer). Humectants are a class of molecules that attract water into the skin like lovely water magnets. Depending on your skin type you either need emollients to lock in the water or none. In any case, we all need humectants.

Hyaluronic acid

I am sure you have heard about this bad boy. Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan (or GAG). Hyaluronic is a key component of the dermis that forms a gel where Collagen and elastin are anchored. But when apply topically hyaluronic acids acts as powerful humectants. The bigger the molecule is the better. An excellent formula should contain different forms like the Hada Labo lotions.

Sugar

That a complex category. Sugars in skincare could be a “simple” sugar one that I love is Trehalose or more complex sugar names polysaccharides. Polysaccharides can be derived from a marine alga (Alteromanas) that you find in the Ordinary Marine Hyaluronic or also from the tremella mushroom.

Propolis and Honey extract

I have been introduced to propolis and Honey extracts by the very charming Gothamista on youtube. There is almost no scientific data on them when applying to skin. I like to have scientific data when I choose a product but I don’t disregard an ingredient because of the lack of scientific studies. There are some parameters that can be easily verified at home. When your skin is well hydrated you can notice right away. The skin looks plumb, slightly dewy and healthy looking. The  Skinfood Royal honey Propolis essence is one of my favorite humectant based serum. The only disclamer is if you are allergic to propolis and honey.

Layer your humectants

What I always recommend is to layer your humectants. The easiest way is to use a toner or essences followed by a serum. The Hada Labo lotions are my favorites.

In my video, I share with more nerdy details and I have more products recommendations.

Thank you for your time
